Iron in female fertility

Low consumption of iron from food is associated with ovulation problems, resulting in reduced fertility.

Iron is also important for implantation and pregnancy, as iron is required for placental growth. Low levels of blood iron results in a smaller placenta, due to a lower concentration of blood vessels. Low ferritin blood levels (<12 microgram/liter), a marker of depleted iron stores, are associated with reduced birth weight.
