What to check after 1 year of failure to conceive

Investigation of a couple's infertility should include an assessment of both partners. For women, the focus should include ovulation, tubal damage and any uterine abnormalities; men’s parameters should include semen-related factors, such as sperm count; the sperms’ ability to swim (motility), including velocity or forward progression; size and shape of the sperm (morphology); total semen volume; and the liquefaction of the semen (the ability to go from a normal, gel-like state at ejaculation to a liquid state).

Physicians also should screen both partners for any infections, such as Chlamydia trachomatis, as well as susceptibility to rubella.
